GONE – a suite about loss

GONE is Craig Harris’ keyboard suite that explores the intense emotional terrain of loss.

The loss of a loved one is accompanied by intense emotional upheaval, filled with complex feelings and memories. The sense of loss can be interpreted more broadly, to include loss experienced through major life changes, even loss resulting from what we experience in the world of the COVID pandemic – loss of our sense of normality, our sense of human connection, potentially loss of income or physical/emotional stability.

GONE can be experienced as a work for live music and/or multimedia performance/installation, recorded music, and video presentation. Video imagery for each movement was created in collaboration with visual artist Candy Kuehn. The multimedia performance version of the work is designed to incorporate video projection into an immersive environment comprised of multiple hanging scrims, with a multi-channel audio distribution design such as is described above. Visit the GONE page on the Interference Arts website to learn more about this project.

The movements in the suite include Passing, Release, Nostalgia, Loss, Emptiness, Gratitude, Regret, Longing, Guilt and Freedom. Meditation: Earth and Sky is an electronic soundscape that serves as a coda to be presented in situations where good quality sound systems are available. GONE can be purchased as a full compilation for download, including all keyboard movements and the electronic soundscape coda; individual movements are available for purchase and download as well. Excerpts are presented with each movement to sample the music.

GONE is available as a compilation or as individual tracks in mp3 format (great for general music listening), or in wav format (high resolution listening and public presentation).

It is SHE Who I See

It is SHE Who I See is Craig Harris’ immersive multimedia performance that celebrates the original woman who is in all of us. It is She Who I See emanates from two sources: a digital illustration created by artist Candy Kuehn that provides the show title, and a poem by renowned poet Rita Dove – “The Hill has Something to Say”. This digital illustration reflects how Candy perceives the original woman whose DNA carries forward into all of us through time. The poem expresses the depth and meaning of all that has unfolded through time on the hill, and reinforces the thread that holds all time together in us.

Presented at the Ritz Theatre in Minneapolis, MN in 2012, the music for It is SHE Who I See includes selections from several of Craig Harris’ works created since 1983, including “The Hill has Something to Say;” “On the Hill,” “On the Hill 2,” and “On the Hill 3,” which are improvisations by the ensemble Shape deconstructing the poem “The Hill has Something to Say”;” “Still,” “Now Time All Time,” “Gentle Rain,” “Lilacs in Spring in Terezin,” and “After the Storm,” from his Piano-Cello Suite; “Beauty Awakens,” Beauty is…,” and “Deep Sleep” from Harris’ Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite; “Threshold,” Harris’ 1983 chamber ensemble work recorded by the ensemble Zeitgeist; and “SHE is,” a work created for this production.

It is SHE Who I See is available as a CD, and for download as a compilation or as individual tracks in mp3 or wav format. Excerpts are presented with each movement to sample the music.

The Red Shoes Ballet Suite

The Red Shoes Ballet Suite is music created for the dance theater Ballet of the Dolls’ production “The Red Shoes,” produced in 2001 and 2002. The show is based on the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger in 1948, which incorporates Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a young girl’s love of dance.

In Hans Christian Andersen’s tale a shoemaker presents her with a magic pair of dance shoes at a street festival, and dance takes control over her when she puts on the shoes. She continues to dance until exhaustion, and can only stop when her feet are chopped off. In “The Red Shoes” movie authoritarian ballet company Director Boris Lermontov rules over his protégés, demanding complete submission to his rules, which include not allowing personal relationships to interfere with their art. He brings a new dancer, Victoria Page, into the company, and cultivates her to play the leading role in their new ballet, The Red Shoes, composed by the company’s resident composer, Julian Craster. Victoria falls in love with Julian, creating a conflict of tragic proportions between Vicky, Julian, and Lermontov. Vicky’s internal conflict between her passion for dance and her love for Julian leads her to commit suicide.

The original production of Ballet of the Dolls’ “The Red Shoes” was produced at the Ritz Theater in Northeast Minneapolis in 2001, and was re-envisioned and produced at Theatre de la Jeune Lune in 2002.

Reimagining Sleeping Beauty

“The Museum” is music composed for the dance theater Ballet of the Dolls’ production “Sleeping Beauty,” produced in 2003.  In the scenario for this show the Prince does not release Sleeping Beauty from her deep sleep with a kiss, and then live happily ever after together. Rather, Sleeping Beauty remains in hibernation in the middle of the forest until she is found after 100 years, and she is put on exhibition in a museum. Sleeping Beauty awakens and finds herself in our current era, faced with confusing notions about beauty and meaning in life. Created in 2003, this project was originally developed in collaboration with Artistic Director/Choreographer Myron Johnson and dance-theater company Ballet of the Dolls, and produced at the company’s space The Dance Factory. Reimagining Sleeping Beauty has been adapted from that original scenario.
