Excerpt from The Hill has Something to Say

Norah Long sings Rita Dove’s poem “The Hill has Something to Say” at the workshop, audio/video recording session and special event “The Making of It is She Who I See,” September 17, 2012. Earlier in It is She Who I See the original woman hands off her coat to Norah to carry forward as she considers the depth and meaning of all that has unfolded through time on the hill, and ponders the thread that holds all time together in us.

Norah’s performance was recorded during the recent workshop in both audio and video formats. The audio performance will become part of the CD “It is She Who I See” that is being created for the November show. The video will become part of the projection design for the November show, where Norah’s presence is “injected” into the immersive performance space.

“The Hill has Something to Say” was originally commissioned for soprano Renée Fleming, and premiered at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hull in 2000. The commission was underwritten by the American Composers Forum, with funds provided by the Jerome Foundation, and by the Hanson Institute for American Music.

Excerpt from On the Hill

In this piece the group performs a deconstruction of Rita Dove’s poem “The Hill has Something to Say” at the workshop, audio/video recording session and special event “The Making of It is She Who I See,” September 17, 2012.

Music performed by the ensemble Shape, an experimental improvisation ensemble comprised of Viv Corringham (vocalist), Stephen Goldstein (laptops and various electronics and controllers) and Craig Harris (real time sampling and processing). Viv extemporizes with a broad vocal palette, with and without words; Stephen draws upon his vast toolbox of sounds, controllers and live performance techniques; and Craig records and processes them both, feeding the material back into the mix to create a sound fabric that the three “shape” together.

Paul Herwig performs “She” at the workshop, audio/video recording session and special event “The Making of It is She Who I See,” September 17, 2012. Randall Davidson on cello, and Craig Harris on piano play Harris’ Suite for Piano Cello. The five movements of the suite correspond to Paul Herwig’s five depictions of “She.”

Excerpt from the Community Engagement part of the program

The audience put on wearable art by local artists and designers, and were invited onto the stage to experience the immersive multimedia environment at the workshop, audio/video recording session and special event “The Making of It is She Who I See,” September 17, 2012. Project midwife Kym Longhi directed the participants in the on-stage activity, where they explored aspects of Beauty and “She-ness.” By revealing and bringing awareness to the state of the gender imbalance, the audience is encouraged to interfere with what has become the norm in our world.

We recorded their presence in the environment to incorporate into the projection design for the November show, representing people who have been “on the hill” in times past, or who will be there in the future. Wearable Art for video shoot provided by Candy Kuehn, Sandra Brick, Gini Corrick, Carol Hallman, and Anna Lee.
