Fairy Tale, from the Reimagining Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite
In “Sleeping Beauty Fairy Tale” Beauty is asleep in her casket. Was Sleeping Beauty’s experience real, or was it all a dream?
Fairy Tale, from the Reimagining Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite“Sleeping Beauty Fairy Tale” is the tenth and closing scene from the Reimagining Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite – music by Craig Harris originally composed for the dance theater production Sleeping Beauty by Minneapolis-based company Ballet of the Dolls. Reimagining Sleeping Beauty is Craig Harris’ ballet suite revisiting the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. In Reimagining Sleeping Beauty, Sleeping Beauty remains in hibernation in the middle of the forest until she is found after 100 years, and she is put on exhibition in a museum. Sleeping Beauty awakens and finds herself in our current era, faced with confusing notions about beauty and meaning in life. Her story unfolds, and Sleeping Beauty returns to the moment of her demise, when she pricked her finger on the spinning wheel and fell into a deep sleep. In “Sleeping Beauty Fairy Tale” Beauty is asleep in her casket. Was Sleeping Beauty’s experience real, or was it all a dream? Reimagining Sleeping Beauty was originally developed in collaboration with Artistic Director/Choreographer Myron Johnson and dance-theater company Ballet of the Dolls in 2003, and produced at the company’s space The Dance Factory.
