“On the Hill 1, 2 and 3” are improvised deconstructions of Rita Dove’s Poem, “The Hill has Something to Say,” and was presented as part of Craig Harris’ production It is SHE Who I See, an immersive multimedia performance that celebrates the original woman who is in all of us.

Rita Dove’s poem expresses the depth and meaning of all that has unfolded on the hill through time, reinforcing the thread that holds all time together in us.

The Hill Has Something to Say
 Rita Dove

 but isn't talking.
Instead the valley groans as the wind,
 amphoric,
 hoots its one bad note.

It is SHE Who I See begins with Craig Harris’ composition “The Hill has Something to Say,” for Soprano, Piano and Amphora (soundscape), and is followed by “On the Hill,” an abstract improvisation of the poem in three sections performed by the SHAPE ensemble.

All sounds for “On the Hill” originate from the live voice, laptop electronic sounds, and live-captured and processed sounds, interspersed throughout the show. Vivian Corringham (vocalist) extemporizes with a broad vocal palette, with and without words; Stephen Goldstein (draws upon his vast toolbox of sounds, controllers and live performance techniques; Craig Harris records and processes them both, feeding the material back into the mix, to create a sound fabric that the three “shape” together.

“On the Hill” was performed in 2012 at Craig Harris’ production of It is SHE Who I See at the Ritz Theatre in Minneapolis, MN, a show that includes live and recorded music in a multi-dimensional soundspace, imagery and pre-taped performance projected onto a stage hung with translucent scrims, lighting design, and movement performed by a male theater artist exploring the states of balance and imbalance in his male and female energy.
