Inter-Section is a feature of the Interference Arts website that provides opportunities for visitors to get quick views into Artistic Director Craig Harris’ work and projects. Inter-Section presents highlights of specific projects with video and audio examples; contextualizes the work; illustrates connections between projects and initiatives; and provides pathways to navigate through the artistic, community development and research projects found on the Interference Arts website.

The February 2022 installment of Inter-Section features the launch of the Interference Arts Store:

The Interference Arts Store is a catalog of Artistic Director Craig Harris’ works that are available for sale, including his Music; Scores to perform some of his compositions; Digital Illustrations by Candy Kuehn created for several of his multimedia performance projects; and photographs by Marion Gray and others documenting Harris’ performances and research. Some of the CDs, scores and digital illustrations/photos are available in physical form; much more is available for download.

The Interference Arts Store launches featuring six of Craig Harris’ projects with 51 music tracks; 35 digital illustrations from six of Harris’ projects; and 5 music scores that are available for people who would like to perform his music.

Whether you purchase products or not, this site provides new pathways into Craig Harris’ body of work spanning decades. It is a unique opportunity to explore the work in the context of the projects that provided the catalyst for their creation. Many music excerpts are available to experience, and this is the first opportunity to view the rich visual material that became part of the design for several projects outside of the performance or presentation experience.

Craig Harris is the Artistic Director of Interference Arts and is a composer, theater artist, writer and producer. Harris creates music, multimedia performances, interactive sculptural environments, and creative story spaces. Here is music composed for a variety of his projects, and the stories behind the music.

GONE – a suite about loss

GONE (2019) is Craig Harris’ keyboard suite that explores the intense emotional terrain of loss.The movements in the suite include Passing, Release, Nostalgia, Loss, Emptiness, Gratitude, Regret, Longing, Guilt and Freedom. Meditation: Earth and Sky is an electronic soundscape that serves as a coda to be presented in situations where good quality sound systems are available. The piano version of the suite is available as a compilation or as individual tracks, in “wav” or in “mp3” format.

It is SHE Who I See
It is SHE Who I See (2012) is Craig Harris’ immersive multimedia performance that celebrates the original woman who is in all of us, based on a digital illustration created by artist Candy Kuehn, and a poem by renowned poet Rita Dove – “The Hill has Something to Say”. The music from the show includes 14 tracks of selections from several of Craig Harris’ works created since 1983, and is available as a physical CD, and for download as a compilation or as individual tracks, in “wav” or in “mp3” format.
The Red Shoes Ballet Suite

The Red Shoes Ballet Suite is music composed by Craig Harris for the dance theater Ballet of the Dolls’ production “The Red Shoes,” produced in 2001 and 2002. The show is based on the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger in 1948, which incorporates Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a young girl’s love of dance.The music from the show includes 8 tracks, and is available as a physical CD, and for download as a compilation or as individual tracks, in “wav” or in “mp3” format. The CD version also includes the music from Harris’ Reimagining Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite.
Reimagining Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite

The Reimagining Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite is music composed by Craig Harris for dance theater Ballet of the Dolls’ production “Sleeping Beauty,” produced in 2003.  In the scenario for this show Sleeping Beauty remains in hibernation in the middle of the forest until she is found after 100 years, and she is put on exhibition in a museum. Sleeping Beauty awakens in our modern era, faced with confusing notions about beauty and meaning in life.

The music from the show includes 10 tracks, and is available as a physical CD, and for download as a compilation or as individual tracks, in “wav” or in “mp3” format. The CD version also includes the music from The Red Shoes Ballet Suite.



















inDelicate Balance
This is the compilation of Craig Harris’ computer music composition inDelicate Balance (1989), comprised of 4 movements: “Cloud to Clarity,” “Somewhere between,” “Room Talk,” and “Room Views.” inDelicate Balance exists at the unseen, imaginary barrier, at once on all sides, and always inside and outside. It contains found sounds, live and manipulated piano sounds, and representations of sounds from the inner ear and internal world.

inDelicate Balance offers a perspective on contemporary existence utilizing the sounds that surround us.The music is available for download as a compilation or as individual tracks, in “wav” or in “mp3” format.

This is an offering of selected individual compositions by Craig Harris, including:

The Hill has Something to Say (2000) – a composition for soprano, piano and amphora, based on a poem by renowned poet Rita Dove. The poem expresses the depth and meaning of all that has unfolded through time on the hill, and reinforces the thread that holds all time together in us. 

Two Movements for Piano – “Still” and “Gentle Rain” (2015), two compositions for solo piano. These pieces originated as movements composed for Harris’ Suite for Cello and Piano, and were re-envisioned to be performed by solo piano.

Music Box Variations II (2019) – a free improvisation using a digital instrument that incorporates sampled sounds from a music box, sampled piano resonance tones, and an electronic piano sound to form the foundation for an improvised theme and variations.

Digital Illustrations & Photographs

A selection of digital illustrations and photographs have been curated to offer a variety of views into Craig Harris’ work, including digital illustrations by Candy Kuehn that were created for projection design in multimedia productions, and photographs by Marion Gray documenting Harris’ research simulating future creative workspaces (learn about the Configurable Space project). Candy Kuehn’s digital illustrations provided dramatic visual source material that was projected into the performance spaces for each production, with imagery displaying on multiple translucent scrims cascading throughout the stage, creating an rich immersive visual environment that complements the multi-channel immersive audio environment. Marion Gary’s photographs have become part of many hybrid performance-presentations and gallery exhibitions presenting Harris’ Configurable Space research, and have been incorporated into several journal articles, book chapters, and international conference proceedings.

SenseAbility

SenseAbility (2017/2018) is Craig Harris’ multimedia dramatic work that explores how our personal experiences and cultural narratives help us navigate issues about individual and community responsibility and accountability. In SenseAbility Harris weaves music and visual textures with his memories of Bethlehem and new family connections in the West Bank.Artist Candy Kuehn created the signature image for this show, and created several images that were integrated into the performance.



Elijah in the Wadi

Elijah in the Wadi (2016) is Craig Harris’ multimedia dramatic performance that explores the life, times, and character of the Prophet Elijah, an iconic figure who appears as a witness and activist in the stories of all three Abrahamic religions – “the People of the Book.”Artist Candy Kuehn created the signature image for this show, and created several images that were integrated into the performance.






The Five Books Project

Craig Harris’ Five Books Project (2007 – 2013) delves into stories from the Five Books of Moses (The Old Testament). It is an exploration about the journey of a people wandering in the wilderness; and it is a story about Moses, an individual called to lead, questioning his purpose and ability along the path.Craig Harris, Candy Kuehn and Damian Day created several images that were integrated into the performance ofFive Books: First Series– the Journey. Candy Kuehn created additional digital illustrations for The Five Books Choral Suite andBabel Clarion.

It is She Who I See (2012) is Craig Harris’ immersive multimedia performance that celebrates the universal woman who is in all of us.Artist Candy Kuehn created the signature image for this show, and several digital illustrations that were integrated into the performance.

Configurable Space – Photographs

Photographer Marion Gray captured Craig Harris’ Configurable Space Project (1987 – 1994), a multi-year research and design initiative that explores future creative work environments, the creative process, and the use of new technological resources to support creativity, and artistic project development and production.
