The ballet company presents a new work, followed by a reception where a young composer claims the music to be his composition; the prima ballerina announces that she is going to get married; and a young dancer is introduced to the authoritarian company director.

In “The Museum,” Sleeping Beauty has been found in the modern era, sleeping in her casket deep in the forest, and is placed on display in a museum. “She looks so alive!” “Do you think she can hear us?” “What do you think she dreams about?” “There’s no life without Beauty.”

Gentle Rain

In “ Beauty Awakens” Sleeping Beauty wakes up in her coffin, and finds herself alone in the museum in what is clearly a different time. She exits the coffin and explores her new state of consciousness and the foreign environment.

Prima Ballerina Irina dances her last ballet with the company after announcing plans to get married.

Release from the bonds of life, from presence; the experience of absence.

Music Box Variations II 

Waves of memories, playful moments, and recollections of gentle shared experiences – like a warm blanket. We can still feel presence.

“Room Talk” is the third movement of Craig Harris’ computer music composition inDelicate Balance (1989), characterized by the following poetic expression:

the sound of Memory.

In “Vicky’s Matinee” new company member Victoria Page gets her opportunity to dance her first solo.

In “Wall Street” Sleeping Beauty escapes from the museum in a state of confusion and anxiety, and ventures out onto New York City’s Wall Street in the modern era.

In “Julian and Vicky pas de deux”  composer Julian Craster and prima ballerina Victoria Page fall in love while preparing the company’s new ballet, The Red Shoes Fairy Tale.

The cloud of “Nostalgia” disperses, revealing a deep sense of “Loss.”

Sleeping Beauty goes through a “Makeover” from her former existence as a princess from a long past era, and is discovered by a fashion director who makes her over into a model beauty mega-star.

“Room Views” is characterized by the following poetic expression:

Views into the present,
Views into the past,
and the future always becoming itself,
because of what it is,
what it was, and
what it has to be.

Unmemorable, unforgettable moments,
and exquisitely insignificant details,
like gentle ghosts, follow everywhere,
aching to be more than what was
left behind in the mist.

In “Only in My Dreams” Beauty experiences modern society through the dreams of those around her.

The dance company’s production of The Red Shoes Fairy Tale premieres, with Vicky performing the lead role, and Julian conducting his new score.

In “Lookalike” Beauty’s exquisite beauty captures the world, and women all around her take on her look, raising tension and anxiety about the importance of visual versus deep beauty.

Following the success of Vicky’s premiere performance in The Red Shoes Fairy Tale, she is torn between her love for Julian and her passion to be a great dancer. Director Lermontov pressures Vicky to dance.

In “Gabriverdi – the Royal Family Welcomes the Birth of Beauty” Beauty is terribly disturbed by her experience and regresses to her previous life, revisiting the royal kingdom into which she was born over a century ago.

Things said and unsaid; done, not done, not undone. Unfulfillable wishes.

Vicky reaches a state of complete distress and confusion, and throws herself in front of a train.

“Beauty Is…” is an exploration of the nature, origin and meaning of Beauty:

Who is Beauty? What is Beauty? Where does Beauty come from? Does Beauty have a place in the modern world?

In “Fairy Tale Reprise” the show must go on, and the ballet company proceeds to present The Red Shoes Fairy Tale without Vicky, in her honor and memory.

Longing to remember, to feel lost presence, to hold on to past moments and memories, to let go of pain and anguish.

In “Deep Sleep” Beauty realizes that modern ideas about Beauty and meaning in life are fleeting and superficial, and that she has no place in the modern world. She returns to her casket, relives the experience pricking her finger on the spinning wheel, and falls back into a deep sleep.

“Guilt” – Incomplete circles. “Freedom” – our loved one’s freedom; our freedom. Freedom to move one; freedom to experience their lives, presence, passing, and absence.

In “Sleeping Beauty Fairy Tale” Beauty is asleep in her casket. Was Sleeping Beauty’s experience real, or was it all a dream?
